MyFamilyMD is a physician-led clinic run by the husband and wife team of Dr. Jason Baker and Dr. Ellie Morch, both seasoned Family Physicians who moved back to Toronto from the Ottawa Valley in 2005. They grew their clinic from just the two of them into a family of six physicians and one Nurse Practioner at its current location in the Loblaws at St. Clair and Bathurst.
The clinic is well staffed with three receptionists (one of whom operates as our part-time office manager) a medical assistant, a data entry clerk and a bookkeeper. Our assistant helps with all well-baby visits, administers adult and childhood immunizations, ear flushes and other minor procedures. Our data entry clerk ensures that the receptionists have time to interact with and direct your patients while incoming reports get entered into the EMR in a timely fashion.
Our clinic is modern and efficient. We run Telus PS EMR enhanced by Pomelo Health which allows online patient bookings and easy, secure communication via email. Our system is designed so all email communication from patients filters through receptionists in order to limit back-and-forth conversations. Virtual visits are conducted via the secure Telus Virtual Visit system, integrated into the EMR. Our phone system is also state-of-the art. We use a voice over IP (VOIP) system that allows phone calls from your computer and easy work off-site. Voice mails are converted to text and emailed to the receptionists. In addition, our clinic is now using PrescribeIT for secure pharmacy communications, Ocean eReferral to streamline the referral process and our physician use the I4c dashboard to optimize preventive care.
We are also quite proud of our fun and user-friendly website. It conveys pertinent information in an organized and well-thought out manner. Traffic on the site is high. Our patients check our site thousands of times per month.
Our early adoption of technology allowed for a seamless transition to virtual visits and off-site work during COVID. Unlike many offices, we did not experience shut downs during the pandemic. Dr. Baker acts as our onsite IT specialist and keeps the entire system tuned and problem-free. In addition, Dr. Baker is a Telus 'super-user' and works as an OntarioMD Physician Peer Leader instructing other clinics on optimization of systems and processes. Interestingly, Dr. Baker and Dr. Morch have run a paperless office since starting in practice in 1997.
Our doctors and staff are collegial, progressive and pre-emptive. We worked together to very quickly alter our work schedules and staffing to accommodate clinics from home and reduce foot-traffic in office. A glass partition at reception, N95 masking policies with proper FIT testing and isolation protocols were quickly put into place. The waiting room was cordoned off and a Ring doorbell and remote door lock have been installed for controlled entry to the office. These measures have allowed all of us to remain healthy and well. Moreover, Dr. Baker and Dr. Morch hold weekly staff meetings to identify quickly any emotional strain among employee, or new barriers to efficiency. Problems are solved in real-time and not left to grow.
Office events occur regularly to celebrate birthdays and life events. We are big fans of karaoke and invite spouses to seasonal get togethers and outings. We've held two Zoom baby showers recently and had a great bowling and laser-tag extravaganza in the last few months.
Our physicians are friends. We socialize and agree on office plans and patient care. We cover each other during absences and illnesses and help each other find locums when needed. We share a back office and regularly consult each other on patient care. Our FHO is also derived from like-minded Family Physicians. This makes our quarterly meetings into social gatherings rather than business debates. We are all positive in our outside use – A rare situation for a Midtown Toronto FHO.
Although you will start as fee-for-service, an application will be submitted immediately to incorporate you into our FHO.
